Chandigarh, April 4: A collaborative effort between Chandigarh and Punjab Police led to the arrest of five men suspected of carrying out a grenade attack in the city. The suspects were reportedly working for handlers in Europe and were found in possession of a Zigana pistol and a hand grenade, officials affirmed during a weekend briefing.
Those in custody include residents from SBS Nagar, Sangrur, and Shimla. Investigations suggest they were part of a sophisticated cell orchestrated by foreign entities.
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that the operation was managed through handlers in Portugal and Germany with support from Pakistan’s intelligence services. The network used a system of cutouts to move arms and explosives across the region.
“Two key perpetrators involved in the attack have also been identified,” the DGP asserted, adding that efforts to establish further links are ongoing.
According to AIG Deepak Pareek of the State Special Operations Cell, the arrested men coordinated the transport and delivery of the grenade used in the Wednesday attack outside the BJP office. The delivery was managed through instructions from a handler based in Portugal.
The AIG maintained that the suspects helped facilitate the movement of the weapon through various operatives.
“Further investigations are ongoing to establish forward and backward linkages in this case,” officials declared.
Authorities registered the formal FIR on April 3 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
