Gujarat Titans Captain Penalized Despite Last-Ball Win

Gill faces ₹12 lakh fine as league enforces strict over-rate regulations

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 9: Shubman Gill has been sanctioned by the BCCI for a slow over-rate during Match 14 of the 2026 Indian Premier League. The Gujarat Titans captain received a ₹12 lakh fine after his side fell behind the required bowling pace in their high-stakes encounter against the Delhi Capitals.

This ruling marks the first such offense for the Titans this year. League management affirmed that the punishment aligns with the standard disciplinary framework for pace-of-play violations. “As this was his team’s first offense of the season… Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL declared in an official release. If the team commits further infractions, the captain risks facing more severe financial penalties and a one-game ban.

The disciplinary news followed an intense game that saw the Capitals fall just one run short of their target. David Miller’s decision-making in the final moments and Rashid Khan’s Player of the Match bowling performance were central to the Titans’ defense of their 210-run total. Although KL Rahul’s nearly-century-long innings brought Delhi to the brink of victory, the Titans managed to hold their ground in the final over.

The league has maintained a firm stance on match durations throughout the 2026 season, with several captains already facing reprimands. Officials asserted that maintaining the flow of the game remains a priority, regardless of the drama unfolding on the pitch during last-over thrillers.
