Chandigarh, May 8: MS Dhoni continues to lead individual income tax contributions in Bihar and Jharkhand for the financial year ending 2026, according to the latest data from the Income Tax department. Principal Chief Commissioner Dr. D. Sudhakara Rao declared that the region’s total tax intake reached ₹20,000 crore, with Jharkhand contributing the lion’s share of the revenue.
The department highlighted that while corporate entities like CMPDI and BCCL are among the top institutional payers, Dhoni stands alone as the highest individual contributor. Officials affirmed that the regional economy’s reliance on Jharkhand’s industrial and mining sectors was evident in the ₹12,000 crore collected from the state.
“M S Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer combining Bihar and Jharkhand,” Rao maintained, though he adhered to privacy protocols by not disclosing the exact figures of the return. He stated that the department is preparing for an even stronger performance in the upcoming cycle by expanding outreach initiatives across both states.
During a meeting attended by 100 officials, the commissioner affirmed that the transition to the Income Tax Act, 2025, is designed to make the system more accessible to the public. He asserted that the legislative shift aims for a streamlined structure without fundamentally altering existing tax policies.
The commissioner also noted a pressing need for broader tax participation, stating that a vast majority of PAN card users in the two states are not currently filing returns. Rao declared that the department will focus on these 5.1 crore non-filers through new transparency measures. “We hope to exceed the Rs 20,000 crore mark in tax collection during the current financial year,” he affirmed, citing the efficiency of the new digital tracking and simplified filing structures.
