Amritsar, June 1: A high-stakes standoff unfolded on Monday as Amritsar rural police teams, led by SP Aditya Warrior, swarmed the residence of former minister Bikram Singh Majithia. The police action comes just one day after a heated protest at the Majitha police station, where political activists and union members demanded the release of Jobanpreet Singh.
While police maintain the raid was a standard investigative step to locate suspects involved in the “attack” on the police station, the political atmosphere remains charged. Supporters of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have characterized the recent arrests as a result of a “fabricated case” driven by political vendetta.
The incident on Sunday began when members of the Kirti Kisan Union, supported by Majithia, alleged that the police had withheld the location of Jobanpreet Singh after picking him up from his home. Protesters claimed that even after confronting the police, they were initially misled before finding the detainee in a room near the SHO’s office.
However, SSP Sohail Qasim Mir maintained that the actions taken by the crowd were criminal in nature.
“The group allegedly attempted to secure Jobanpreet’s release from police custody,” Mir stated, noting that members of the mob reportedly tore official case files and damaged public property.
In response to the chaos, the Punjab Police have launched a massive manhunt, constituting 12 teams to track down the agitators. An FIR has been filed against more than 50 individuals, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been tasked with handling the case.
As the legal proceedings begin, the police have declared their commitment to holding those who disrupted the “lawful functioning” of the station accountable. Meanwhile, the political opposition continues to monitor the situation, signaling a deepening rift between local authorities and opposition leadership.
