Shimla, July 20: Meteorological authorities issued high-level weather warnings for Himachal Pradesh, extending a red alert until July 21 as monsoon systems deliver intense precipitation across mountain corridors. The advisory highlights heightened risks of landslides, mudslides, sudden stream surges, and poor driving visibility across vulnerable sectors.
According to updates from the IMD, the state experienced light to moderate rainfall over the past day, with heavy cloud accumulation persisting over northwestern and southern districts. Primary warnings center on Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur, which face the most severe rainfall forecasts.
“Widespread rain is likely to continue across the state until July 23, with the heaviest spell expected over the next two days,” IMD Senior Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma stated.
Neighboring districts including Una, Hamirpur, Kullu, and Solan remain on orange alert status, while higher-altitude regions such as Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur maintain yellow alerts. Weather patterns are projected to ease marginally from July 22 onward, leading into clearer conditions toward the end of the week.
Disaster management directives advised the public to monitor local travel advisories and maintain safe distances from active river channels.
“There is a possibility of rising water levels in rivers and streams,” Sandeep Kumar Sharma warned. “People should avoid going near water bodies.”
Cumulative weather statistics indicate that eight of the twelve districts in Himachal Pradesh continue to operate under a rainfall deficit, despite localized heavy downpours in select hill pockets.
