New Delhi, July 23: An Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police has been pulled from field duties in central Delhi following public outrage over digital footage depicting the physical assault of a woman demonstrator. Officer Sandeep Lamba was ordered to vacate his temporary post overseeing security operations at the Cockroach Janta Party demonstration and report back to his home district.
The incident occurred during a large-scale student rally moving toward Parliament, where security cordons deployed lathi charges to halt the procession.
Recording devices captured the officer approaching a female participant on the sidelines, sparking immediate vocal protests from surrounding citizens before spreading across online channels.
The viral recording prompted formal objections during a Delhi High Court hearing regarding police conduct during the public assembly.
Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan presented the video evidence to the bench, emphasizing that the footage clearly showed unprovoked physical action against a stationary demonstrator and requesting official accountability.
Following internal consultations, senior departmental leadership decided to terminate the officer’s deployment in the New Delhi security zone.
While departmental officials noted that several officers sustained injuries while managing crowd movements during the demonstration, the decision was made to return the officer to his permanent assignment while authorities document the event.
