Chandigarh, August 7 — A comprehensive transformation report delivered in the Punjab Legislative Assembly revealed that the state has attained the number one position in school education quality across India, moving past long-standing top performers like Kerala.
Presenting the data during an assembly session, School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains asserted that targeted state initiatives have systematically addressed critical gaps in public education infrastructure and student achievement. Major structural projects totaling ₹2,638 crore have successfully upgraded facilities across more than 19,000 government schools since 2022.
The minister highlighted foundational improvements, pointing out that basic requirements such as boundary walls, sanitation facilities, and timely study materials have been systematically addressed across the state. In addition to physical repairs, tailored learning models now support approximately 12 lakh students annually to raise core reading and mathematics capabilities.
“The era of humiliation is over, and teachers will no longer have to seek donations to run government schools,” Bains declared, emphasizing that direct institutional funding has replaced past administrative shortfalls.
The minister also cited specialized academic training programs that enabled hundreds of students from rural and border regions to clear national competitive exams. Further modernization efforts are scheduled following the approval of an additional ₹1,000 crore allocation designated for advanced school upgrades.
