SUNARIYA, August 25 — Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was released from Sunariya jail in Rohtak district on Tuesday following the grant of a 21-day furlough. Escorted by tight police security, he exited the jail complex early in the morning to travel to his ashram in Sirsa.

“This is the third time this year and the 17th time overall that he has been released from jail on parole since he was sentenced,” declared law enforcement representatives overseeing the transit arrangements. He previously received a 40-day parole in January followed by a 30-day release in May.

The Dera chief was convicted in August 2017 by a special CBI court for the sexual assault of two female followers, receiving a 20-year sentence. His repeated releases on parole and furlough have been executed under applicable state prison guidelines governing convict leave.

During the 21-day period, the convict will reside at the Sirsa headquarters of the sect. Administrative officials declared that necessary police arrangements remain in place to prevent any breach of peace or security violations during the period.
