AAP Seeks Pension Hike, Welfare Access for Widows

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, 24 June — Marking International Widows Day, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called on the Chandigarh Administration to enhance monthly pensions for widows and ensure timely disbursal of pending dues.

Vijaypal Singh, president of AAP’s Chandigarh unit, demanded that pensions for the months of January to April 2025 be released without further delay. “Widows in the city are being denied what is rightfully theirs. The backlog of payments must be cleared immediately,” he said.

Singh also urged the administration to extend comprehensive welfare support to widows, including access to health services, housing schemes, educational assistance and other social welfare benefits. “These women must not be left behind — they deserve dignity, security and opportunities to rebuild their lives,” he said.

As part of AAP’s appeal, Singh said widows should be granted reservation in government jobs and prioritised in public sector recruitment processes. “Economic independence is key to empowerment, and the government must ensure inclusivity in employment,” he added.

The party’s demands were made during an event organised to observe International Widows Day, drawing attention to the economic and social challenges faced by widows across the country. AAP leaders stated that the issue requires urgent administrative attention and long-term policy commitment.
