Ammonia leak at Jalandhar milk plant, 12 workers rescued

by TheReportingTimes

Jalandhar, August 25: A dozen workers were trapped on the first floor of a private milk plant in Jalandhar on Monday evening after an ammonia gas leak, prompting an urgent rescue operation.

The incident took place at the Metro Milk Plant near the Leather Complex on Kapurthala Road. Officials said the trapped workers were evacuated after emergency responders broke through a side wall and used ladders and cranes to bring them down safely. No injuries were reported.

“This was a high-risk situation. Our teams had to act quickly to ensure everyone was brought out safely,” one of the rescue officials said.

The leak marks the third ammonia-related incident in the city within a year, following two similar cases at local ice factories. Authorities said they are investigating the cause of the latest leak to determine lapses and ensure safety protocols are enforced.

Residents living near the plant expressed concern over repeated gas-related incidents. Officials said further inspections of industrial units handling hazardous substances would be undertaken.
