Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Dec 24: Punjab has formally declared the walled city of Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo as holy cities, enforcing a ban on the sale of meat, alcohol, tobacco and other intoxicants, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Sunday.
The notification follows a resolution passed unanimously last month during a special session of the Punjab Assembly held at Anandpur Sahib.
“These cities associated with the sacred Takhts have now officially been granted the status of centres of faith and holy cities,” Mann said.
Speaking in a video message, the chief minister said the decision reflects the spiritual significance of the three cities. “This decision respects the sanctity of these places, which are deeply connected with Sikh history and faith,” he said.
Mann said the government would ensure necessary arrangements for pilgrims. “Facilities including e-rickshaws, mini-buses and other public transport services will be ensured for the devotees and sangat arriving from across the world,” he said.
He reiterated that enforcement would be strict. “The sale of meat, alcohol, tobacco and intoxicating substances will be completely prohibited in these cities,” Mann said.
Assuring continued support, the chief minister said, “I assure you with full responsibility that no effort will be spared in ensuring the overall and appropriate development of these cities. They are not only religious centres but also symbols of our cultural heritage.”
The notification issued on Dec. 15 accords special status to the three cities in recognition of their historical and religious importance.
