BCCI to likely release IPL 2026 schedule in halves

Assembly elections prompt shift in tournament start to March 28

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Feb 27: The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League is set for a revised start on March 28 following a decision by the BCCI to push the opening date back by 48 hours. Despite the shift in the start date, the tournament final is still scheduled to take place on May 31.

Officials noted that the adjustment is necessary as the board monitors the Election Commission’s announcements regarding state elections in regions hosting key franchises. Specifically, the scheduling for matches in Kolkata, Chennai, and Guwahati remains dependent on poll dates. Legal and sporting sources affirmed that the board may follow historical precedent by announcing the fixtures in two legs to navigate these administrative challenges.

“The IPL 2026 season is now most likely to begin two days later, on March 28,” a source declared, adding that the conclusion of the league will not be impacted. This trend of split scheduling has been a recurring feature of the IPL during major election cycles, ensuring that the “cash-rich league” proceeds without compromising public safety or electoral processes.

A significant point of discussion for the upcoming season is the home ground for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Although RCB secured the 2025 title by defeating Punjab Kings, their return to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is still under deliberation by the franchise leadership. This follows a period of inactivity at the venue since a fatal stampede during celebrations last year. The IPL governing council is expected to meet shortly to finalize these operational details and clarify the status of the opening match.
