The bilateral initiative seeks to establish binding security commitments while securing a one-year stay on court-mandated penalties, including a death sentence issued during recent legal proceedings.
Talks surrounding the initiative gained momentum following diplomatic meetings held by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and US Special Envoy Sergio Gor. Security officials subsequently met with Bangladesh Defence Adviser AKM Shamsul Islam and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed to discuss operational parameters and regional stability.
US and Indian officials have communicated these proposals to senior members of the Bangladeshi government, seeking Dhaka’s cooperation, sources maintained, asserting that diplomatic mediation aims to foster stability between political entities.
