Washington. July 9: A coordinated international law enforcement sweep named Operation Hard Ball has culminated in US federal charges against imprisoned gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi and his North American counterpart Goldy Brar for directing the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The comprehensive nine-count indictment charges 37 individuals across three separate cases, exposing a sophisticated network running extortion, human smuggling, and narcotics trafficking across multiple continents.
The unsealed legal documents focus entirely on the criminal enterprise, explicitly avoiding any allegations against state entities. This matches recent updates from Canadian law enforcement, which have moved away from previous political rhetoric regarding the case. Canadian Police Deputy Commissioner Lisa Moreland affirmed that there was no evidence to support claims of a government link to the shooting outside a Surrey gurdwara.
The US Department of Justice detailed how the syndicate managed to execute global operations despite its leadership being incarcerated. Investigators revealed that Bishnoi utilized contraband mobile phones and internet-based devices from inside an Indian correctional facility to orchestrate political assassinations, kidnappings, and drug distribution throughout North America and Europe. To fund these violent operations, the group moved large volumes of cocaine across the US-Canada border and seized hundreds of kilograms of narcotics from rival operations in the Los Angeles area.
Faced with the challenge of secure confinement, US prosecutors declared their intention to bring the ringleaders to American soil through official treaty channels. US Attorney Essayli asserted that authorities intended to pursue the extradition of those charged, emphasizing that the current restrictions had not stopped the group from managing their operations. Essayli declared that when they come to a federal prison in the US, he guarantees they won’t be extorting any more victims once they are in US custody.
The expansive multi-agency operation also dismantled two other major transnational networks tied to the region. Indictments were leveled against syndicates directed by Punjab gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Canada-based operator Ravinder Singh Dhanda. Total seizures from the combined law enforcement action included approximately 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, a kilogram of heroin, weapons, and tens of thousands of dollars in illicit cash.
