Air Defense Tops Agenda as Zelenskyy, Meloni Meet at NATO Summit

by TheReportingTimes

Ankara, July 8: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held strategic talks in Ankara focused on establishing an anti-ballistic defense coalition to counter intense drone and missile strikes. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the broader alliance gathering, centered on Ukraine’s immediate need for high-altitude defense systems as five more lives were lost in recent urban strikes. The discussion followed a broader call by Kyiv for European nations to rapidly accelerate the production of missile defense systems.

The Ukrainian leadership described the continuous nature of the aerial campaign, pointing out that several major cities were targeted simultaneously.

“Russia does not stop attacking our cities and communities. Today, there were ballistic missile strikes again, and attack drones were launched as well. Sadly, there are people killed in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson. Russia has taken the lives of five people. My condolences to their families and loved ones.”

Zelenskyy asserted that the creation of a coordinated shield would serve as a structural upgrade for the entire European security architecture.

“We discussed the prospects for our joint work in Europe on anti-ballistic capabilities to provide greater protection for everyone — both Ukraine and every country.”

The conversation focused heavily on the logistical supply of defense inventory, with the Ukrainian delegation expressing hope for a timely response from Rome. The president declared that Italy’s consistent stance on security matters remains vital for his country’s defense plans.

“We spoke about the need for additional interceptors, and we are counting very much on support. Italy has always helped in a principled way to protect life.”

The focus on immediate defense procurement contrasted slightly with optimistic statements from other global leaders regarding the long-term path of the war. US President Donald Trump declared that following independent talks with both Moscow and Kyiv, he believes a negotiated settlement remains possible in the near future. Trump maintained that the conflict brings immense instability to the European continent, describing the high level of violence as an issue that must be resolved through immediate diplomatic intervention.
