Chandigarh, Dec 3: Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday said the party will prepare to fight all 117 Assembly seats in 2027 on its own, shutting down speculation of a renewed partnership with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Sharma made the statement after a meeting on preparations for block samiti and zila parishad elections. Asked about Amarinder Singh’s recent interview backing a BJP-SAD pre-poll pact, Sharma said the former chief minister had spoken in a personal capacity.
“Captain Saab is an elder and has his own views,” Sharma said. “But the party has been clear from the beginning. We are building our organisation and our strategy for all 117 seats.”
The remarks echo those of Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, who said in October that the BJP would go alone and dismissed any chance of an alliance with the SAD, which quit the NDA in 2020 over the farm laws.
Sharma said 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had generated a “sense of trust and hope” among voters in Punjab. He said the people were demanding a crackdown on drugs, stronger law and order and minimum support price security for crops.
He also responded to Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s comment that the BJP could not form a government by itself. “Since when did our sister Harsimrat become an astrologer?” he said. “Nothing is impossible in politics.”
Sharma accused the AAP government of trying to distract voters. “They have already started sensing the outcome of the 2027 elections. That is why, in panic, they are making baseless statements,” he said.
He questioned the state government’s performance on public safety and welfare. “Has the law and order situation improved? Has the drug mafia ended? Have the promises to farmers, labourers and women been fulfilled?” he asked.
