Chandigarh, November 29, 2025: The Chandigarh traffic police have issued more than 7.12 lakh challans this year, showing that even 2,085 CCTV cameras installed at major junctions have not deterred habitual violators. Fines collected between January and November 5 stand at roughly ₹17 crore.
A traffic official said the numbers, though high, mark a decline from 2024, when the police issued 9.91 lakh challans and collected ₹26.72 crore. “The drop is encouraging, but it doesn’t mean violations are under control,” he said, adding that red-light jumping continues to dominate enforcement records.
More than 3.6 lakh challans this year were issued for running red lights. Overspeeding violations crossed 79,000, and more than 15,000 motorists were penalised for riding without helmets. Police recorded over 3,700 drunk-driving cases, while the tally for triple-riding remained under 1,000. Other offences, including lane violations and improper parking, accounted for more than 2.7 lakh challans.
Citizen reporting played a major role in enforcement. Posters led to roughly 40,000 challans, while complaints filed through Instagram, Facebook and X added nearly 6,000 more. WhatsApp submissions—now one of the police’s most active reporting channels—resulted in over 34,000 challans.
“Technology helps, but road behaviour won’t change unless people take responsibility,” the official said.
