Chandigarh, July 14 – Recognised once again for its sustained excellence in urban sanitation, Chandigarh has secured a place in the Super Swachh League, a special category introduced under the Swachh Survekshan 2024. The league features cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakh that have consistently demonstrated top-tier performance in cleanliness over recent years.
The final rankings will be announced during a national award ceremony on July 17 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to be presided over by the President of India. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has extended formal invitations to cities qualifying for the Super Swachh League, including Chandigarh, which will be honoured during the event. A group photograph with the President has been scheduled for delegates from each recognised city.
Chandigarh’s delegation, led by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, will include up to 10 representatives, including key municipal officials and sanitation workers who have contributed to the city’s success.
“This recognition is a testament to Chandigarh’s commitment to sustainable sanitation practices,” said Mayor Babla. “We continue to raise the bar when it comes to cleanliness, and our consistent performance reflects the collective effort of every stakeholder involved.”
The Super Swachh League was conceptualised to acknowledge cities that have been ranked in the top three at least once over the last three years and have secured a place among the top 20 in their category this year.
Chandigarh has shown steady progress in recent Swachh Survekshan assessments. In the 2023 rankings, the city was placed 11th among cities with a population exceeding one lakh—an improvement from its 12th position in 2022.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Mohali and Panchkula have not been invited to the upcoming Delhi ceremony. Mohali had made a significant leap in the 2023 survey, jumping 31 places to rank 82nd from 113th the previous year. In contrast, Panchkula slipped dramatically—from 86th in 2022 to 139th in 2023.
Conducted annually by MoHUA since 2016 under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission, Swachh Survekshan is the world’s largest urban cleanliness and sanitation survey. Cities are assessed on multiple parameters including door-to-door segregated waste collection, plastic waste management, zero waste event implementation, and inclusive sanitation infrastructure.
Chandigarh’s inclusion in the elite league marks yet another milestone in its journey toward becoming one of the cleanest urban centres in India.
