Chandigarh Jail Launches Skill Training Programme for Inmates

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, April 6:— In a bid to rehabilitate inmates and reduce repeat offenses, Chandigarh Police have launched a skill development programme at Model Jail, Sector 51, in collaboration with the UT department of technical education.

A vocational lab will soon be set up inside the jail, where inmates will receive hands-on training in trades like carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, and sewing. The initiative will follow a blended learning model, combining offline workshops with online modules, and will culminate in nationally recognised ITI certifications.

Currently housing 1,120 inmates — 1,000 men and 120 women — the jail administration aims to break the cycle of crime and unemployment by offering vocational training aligned with Industrial Training Institute (ITI) curricula.

“Post release, many inmates struggle to reintegrate into society due to the absence of livelihood skills. This programme is designed to change that,” said IG (Prisons) RK Singh, adding that certified inmates will be better placed to find employment or start businesses.

The programme also includes women inmates, with modules in tailoring, basic plumbing, and electrical work tailored to their needs.

The jail administration will coordinate with local industries and employment offices to help certified inmates secure jobs after their release.
