Chandigarh UT Moves Forward with ₹16-Crore All-Weather Bridge Project

New four-lane crossing over Sukhna Choe to feature dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 25 — To enhance urban connectivity and mitigate rain-related disruptions, the UT administration has sanctioned the construction of a 26.6-meter-wide bridge over the Sukhna Choe. The ₹16.63 crore project, which has been part of the Chandigarh Master Plan since 2013, aims to replace the narrow and aging causeway that currently links Sector 26 with Manimajra.

Engineering department officials affirmed that the project was finalized after multiple design revisions to ensure compliance with the city’s heritage and urban framework. Of the total budget, approximately ₹6.98 crore is allocated for the bridge viaduct, while the remaining funds will cover approach roads, junctions, and protection works. The administration stated that the use of precast technology and reinforced cement concrete will ensure the bridge’s durability against heavy monsoon discharge.

The new bridge is designed to eliminate the persistent traffic congestion that occurs as heavy daily commuters head toward the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Sukhna Lake. The administration declared that by matching the width of the four-lane approach roads, the new structure will remove the “bottleneck” effect that has frustrated drivers for years. Safety is a primary focus, with the inclusion of crash barriers and dedicated lanes for non-motorized transport.

Recent monsoon seasons have shown the vulnerability of the current low-level crossing, which has been repeatedly washed out or closed due to rising water levels. The administration maintained that the new high-level structure will ensure uninterrupted transit throughout the year. With the tendering process set to commence immediately, the UT engineering department expects the bridge to be fully operational by mid-2027, providing a crucial link for thousands of daily travelers.
