Dehradun, 27 January 2025- Uniform Civil Code came into force on Monday in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. With the implementation of this law, the definition of live-in relationship has completely changed. Now a couple will be able to live in a live-in relationship only if they register within a month.
If registration is not done within a month after coming into a live-in relationship, the law will punish. Its provisions have been made in the Uniform Civil Code. At the same time, any of the two partners in the live-in can end this relationship, which will have to be informed to the sub-registrar. Live-in relationship has been clearly defined in the UCC.
According to this, only an adult man and an adult woman will be able to live in a live-in relationship. They should not be already married or in a live-in relationship or prohibited degrees of relationship with anyone else.
Every person living in a live-in will have to do mandatory registration on a registered web portal. If registration is not done within one month of live-in, then if convicted by judicial magistrate, then there can be three months imprisonment and fine of 10 thousand or both.
Can ask for maintenance even in live-in
If a man leaves a woman, then the woman will have the right to present her case before the court demanding maintenance. At the same time, after live-in registration, the registrar will give them the receipt of registration. On the basis of that receipt, the couple will be able to rent a house or hostel or PG. The registrar will have to give information about the couple registering to their parents or guardian.
The child will get all the rights
The children born during live-in will be considered the legitimate children of that couple and that child will get all the rights of a biological child. It will also be mandatory for every person living in a live-in relationship to register the separation. In the Uniform Civil Code, there will be no difference between adopted children, children born through surrogacy and children born through assisted reproductive technology. They are considered biological children like others.
