Chandigarh, Dec 31, 2025: All schools in Punjab will remain closed until Jan. 7 as the state government extended winter holidays in response to ongoing cold weather and fog, officials said Tuesday.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the decision was taken following directions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, with student and staff safety cited as the primary concern.
“Keeping in view the continuously increasing cold and fog in the state, and with due consideration to the health and safety of children and staff, holidays are being declared in all government, aided, recognized, and private schools of the state until January 7,” Bains said.
Schools across Punjab had already been closed since Dec. 24 under the winter vacation schedule, which was initially set to end on Dec. 31. The revised order extends the break by another week.
Officials said schools will reopen on Jan. 8 as per the regular schedule unless further orders are issued. Punjab has been experiencing prolonged cold conditions, with foggy mornings disrupting traffic and routine activities in several regions.
The education department has advised parents and schools to stay alert for updates in case weather conditions worsen further.
