Chandigarh, Feb 10: The president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, has characterized the Governor’s recent anti-drug march as a “Samjhauta Express” intended to bridge the gap between the Akali Dal and the BJP.
Warring mentioned that the timing and participation in the march signaled a strategic move to help Sukhbir Singh Badal revive his party’s standing in the state. He noted that the collaboration between the Raj Bhavan and the SAD leadership appeared to be a calculated effort to create a platform for a renewed political partnership. According to the Congress leader, the campaign serves as a form of “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” for the Akali Dal ahead of the electoral cycle.
“I would request you to raise the matter with the union Home Ministry before running the ‘Samjhauta Express’ for an Akali-BJP alliance in the name of anti-drug march,” Warring directly said. He noted that the Governor should first focus on the role of central agencies in securing the borders before leading public demonstrations on the issue.
The Congress president noted that the expansion of the BSF’s operational zone was a significant factor that the Governor should have discussed with federal authorities. He mentioned that the drug problem in Punjab is deeply linked to smuggling across the borders, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry. Warring noted that while the Aam Aadmi Party government has been ineffective, the central government’s role in preventing the entry of narcotics is equally crucial.
Warring also mentioned that the visual documentation of the march provided a clear indication of its political nature. He noted that the pictures of the participants together were “too nice to be overlooked” and served to convey a specific message regarding the future of the state’s political landscape.
