CSK splurge puts spotlight on young all-rounder Prashant Veer

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Dec 16— Prashant Veer’s journey from domestic cricket to an eight-figure IPL contract took a dramatic leap after Chennai Super Kings snapped up the 20-year-old all-rounder for ₹14.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction.

The Uttar Pradesh player, who remains uncapped at the international level, became the most expensive uncapped signing of the auction despite entering with a base price of ₹30 lakh.

Veer has built his reputation as a right-handed batter who can provide useful spin, making him a valuable option in demand-driven mini-auctions. His breakout moment came during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, where he emerged as a key contributor to Uttar Pradesh’s title-winning campaign.

In one of the tournament’s standout performances, Veer struck 37 not out off 10 balls and claimed three wickets against Jammu and Kashmir. “He thrives under pressure,” a senior domestic coach said. “That’s a rare quality at his age.”

His consistency has been evident across formats. In the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in October 2022, Veer returned figures of 3 for 34 against Chandigarh, and he followed that up with another three-wicket haul in the 2023 BCCI Under-23 One-Day Tournament.

With CSK known for backing young talent, Veer now faces the challenge of translating domestic promise into impact at the IPL level.
