Rohtak, August 23: Congress MP Deepender Hooda addressed public pushback over his recent statements regarding the passing of former MP Sajjan Kumar, declaring that he had no intention of hurting public sentiments or praising the late politician as a figure to emulate. The lawmaker faced heavy scrutiny from several political quarters in Punjab after describing Kumar’s death as a notable loss to the political landscape.
Clarifying his position, Hooda affirmed that critics were misconstruing his tribute to play divisive politics. He maintained that his family’s historical ties with the Sikh community remain steadfast, highlighting their consistent advocacy for community rights and active participation in public causes alongside regional groups.
In response to sharp rebukes from Punjab leaders who emphasized the unhealed wounds of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Hooda stated that his stance on the tragedy has been unwavering from the beginning. He asserted that the Sikh community deserves complete justice and declared that perpetrators of the 1984 violence must receive strict punishment under the law, seeking to set the record straight following intense political debate.
