Inter-State Pollution Row Escalates as Legal Action Targets Himachal Factories

Environmental Advocates Urge Ministerial Dialogue and Real-Time Water Monitoring at Punjab Border

by TheReportingTimes

ROPAR, AUGUST 23: Legal and administrative measures are expanding in Punjab to counter the persistent influx of toxic chemical waste flowing into the Sutlej river from industrial hubs across the state border. Law enforcement officials in Ropar registered an FIR against factory operators in Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi and Nalagarh areas following evidence of heavy pollutants draining through the Sirsa river tributary into Punjab’s primary freshwater networks.

The criminal complaint highlights widespread concerns over deteriorating public health, noting that chemical effluents from upstream manufacturing facilities jeopardize drinking water safety and local agricultural operations. Official records identify the suspected parties generally as industrial operations functioning within the border manufacturing belt, establishing a framework for formal investigation into environmental violations.

Emphasizing the urgency of the crisis, environmentalists have called for immediate executive coordination between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh state leadership. Representatives stated that pharmaceutical and chemical processing plants upstream routinely release untreated wastewater before the river crosses into Punjab at Ghanauli. Campaigners affirmed that the state government must mandate automated pollution tracking sensors along incoming waterways to identify non-compliant industrial units and safeguard public water supplies.
