Ludhiana, May 23: A multi-layered cyber fraud network leveraging the digital popularity of a viral parody organization has prompted a formal investigation and district-wide public safety campaign by the Ludhiana Police, senior officials affirmed Friday.
The fraudulent operation targets smartphone users by sending manipulative WhatsApp messages inviting them to join the digital membership drive of the popular online satirical group, the Cockroach Janata Party. Law enforcement experts warned that the embedded links contain advanced malware designed to bypass standard mobile security protocols, effectively handing total control of financial applications and personal data over to external scammers.
The enforcement response includes targeted digital awareness campaigns to prevent residents from compromising their data out of curiosity or political enthusiasm.
“Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma has appealed to residents not to be swayed by social media trends or emotional messages and to refrain from clicking on unknown links,” officials stated, adding that ignoring basic cyber precautions could eliminate an individual’s life savings within minutes.
According to a detailed video presentation published by investigator Amarinder Singh, the financial exposure extends beyond the immediate theft of existing bank balances. Once the device is breached, scammers regularly exploit the victim’s identity to execute unauthorized loans worth lakhs of rupees through verified banking applications.
The investigative context reveals that the targeted scam emerged directly alongside the explosive growth of the parody political group, which secured 19.1 million platform followers in less than a week from its base in Boston. Following the withholding of its primary account on X within India, the group’s creator expressed concerns regarding potential regulatory actions.
The police department maintained that operational teams will continue monitoring the distribution of these phishing scripts. Officials stated that victims should immediately contact the dedicated 1930 national cyber helpline to ensure rapid institutional intervention and maximize the chance of financial recovery.
