Diwali Wins UNESCO Heritage Status

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Dec 10, 2025: — Diwali has officially been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, a move the organisation announced on Wednesday while extending congratulations to India.

The decision coincides with Delhi hosting the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Intangible Heritage from December 8 to 13. In response, the central government plans to hold a special Diwali celebration on December 10 to underline India’s cultural legacy before global delegates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the recognition, saying it reflects the enduring power of the festival. “Diwali is the soul of our civilization,” he said. “It is tied to our culture and our relationship with nature. Its inclusion will strengthen its global reach.”

UNESCO’s intangible heritage list captures cultural practices, rituals and traditions that are passed down across generations. India’s existing entries include Durga Puja, the Kumbh Mela, Vedic chanting, Ramlila and Chhau dance, all of which showcase the country’s diverse cultural landscape.

With Diwali now added, India’s cultural footprint in the global heritage registry becomes broader, reinforcing efforts to preserve and promote living traditions.
