CHANDIGARH, July 27 — Highlighting the pivotal role of home support systems, the Punjab government’s anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ is increasingly focusing on involving family members to ensure sustained recovery from substance abuse. Health authorities noted that women in households often serve as the primary motivators and caregivers in guiding individuals toward clinical treatment.
Addressing the role of home environments, Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh maintained that the state administration is committed to supporting families through free medical care, professional counselling, and rehabilitation infrastructure.
“The success of Mann Government’s Yudh Nashean Virudh lies in making the fight against addiction a people’s movement, and we’ll continue to center the voices of women who are leading this change,” declared Dr Balbir Singh.
Medical experts in the state affirmed that clinical interventions are significantly reinforced when backed by consistent emotional stability at home.
“Recovery from substance dependence is most successful when treatment is complemented by a strong support system at home. While the government has strengthened access to free treatment, counselling, and rehabilitation services across the state, the involvement of family members remains critical,” stated Dr Arvind Goyal, District Nodal Psychiatrist.
At an interaction organised at Jalalabad, family members of former patients discussed their experiences in navigating the treatment process.
Ludhiana resident Ragini Kaur asserted that accessing professional rehabilitation services turned their lives around, stating, “Today he is completely sober. After my husband became free of drug addiction, we also helped my mama’s son undergo a de-addiction course at the same place.”
Sharing a similar experience, Balwinder Kaur of Moga stated that timely medical guidance and family involvement helped her husband recover fully, while also encouraging others in their neighborhood to seek treatment for heroin dependence.
