Ex-PUCSC VP Seeks Term Extension, Defined Powers

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, June 17: Even as Panjab University begins drafting a constitution for the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC), former vice-president Archit Garg has submitted a formal proposal seeking a term extension for PUCSC office-bearers until the next elections and a clear definition of powers for all elected posts.

Garg pointed out that the varsity lacks student representation from the end of May until elections are held, typically in late August or September. He urged that the outgoing council’s term be extended to ensure continuity in student governance.

In his submission to the committee, Garg also emphasised the need to strengthen the roles of the vice-president and joint secretaries, arguing they should not remain mere deputies to the president and general secretary. He has also proposed checks and balances to curb administrative interference in the council’s functioning.

The university had constituted the drafting committee on the directions of PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig, following Garg’s initial demand last month. The constitution is expected to be finalised before the upcoming elections. PUCSC currently operates without a formal written constitution—an issue also flagged by 2023 president Jatinder Singh in his election manifesto.
