Panipat, Dec 22: A joint police team arrested four suspected extortionists after an encounter in the Israna area of Panipat district, officials said on Monday.

One of the accused sustained a bullet injury during the operation and was admitted to the Civil Hospital, police said. He was identified as Parmeet, while the remaining accused — Devender, Sahil and Aman — were arrested at the spot.

“All four accused are residents of Shaharmalpur village,” Panipat SP Bhupender Singh said.

According to police, the men were wanted in an extortion case involving a demand of Rs 2.5 crore from a businessman in the Chandnibagh police station area.

“The threat call was made on December 18 in the name of the Bambiha gang,” Singh said, adding that several teams were deployed to track down the suspects after the FIR was registered.

Police said three firearms were seized from the accused during the operation, including two foreign-made pistols and a country-made weapon.

The injured accused remains under medical supervision, and further legal action is being taken, police said.
