Mohali, November 15: Mohali police have busted an interstate fake currency gang and recovered ₹9.95 crore in fake and demonetised notes from Dera Bassi. The accused allegedly also duped a Phase 4 Mohali jeweller of ₹7 crore in a carefully orchestrated currency exchange fraud.
Authorities said two men, Sachin and Gurdeep, both from Kurukshetra, were apprehended after police intercepted their white Scorpio-N near the Ghaggar bridge based on a tip-off. Investigations revealed that the duo had visited the jeweller’s shop under the pretext of buying jewellery. They claimed they were exchanging old ₹2,000 notes and promised a 10% commission to the jeweller if he helped arrange clients.
“The victim, believing the scheme, transferred ₹7 crore from his account expecting a profit. Once the money was sent, the accused blocked him and vanished,” police said. Further checks showed that the gang had a history of similar scams registered in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other states.
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Hans described their method: “They placed genuine notes on the outer layers of bundles while filling the inside with fake currency to defraud people.”
A new FIR has been lodged against the accused at Dera Bassi Police Station, and police said further arrests are expected as investigations continue.
