Fresh snowfall blankets Rohtang, forces tighter tourist controls

Rohtang, Dec 9: A sudden spell of snowfall returned to Rohtang Pass on Monday, transforming one of Himachal Pradesh’s busiest tourist spots after weeks of warm, snowless weather and prompting authorities to restrict movement on vulnerable stretches.

Snow began falling through the morning across Rohtang, Baralacha La and Shinku La as a new western disturbance moved in, leaving the Manali and Lahaul–Spiti valleys shrouded in low clouds. By afternoon, the high peaks were coated in white for the first major spell of the season. Officials said the weather pattern could intensify through the week, potentially giving the winter tourism cycle an early push.

The shift also came with immediate curbs. Tourists headed toward Rohtang were stopped at Marhi as roads turned slick and visibility dropped. Visitors were redirected toward Koksar, where snow could be viewed without risking the ascent.

Lahaul-Spiti Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana said the Manali–Leh highway has now been officially shut for winter. “The stretch beyond Darcha is unsafe. People should not attempt to travel toward Baralacha La,” she said. Shinku La remains open only for four-wheel-drive vehicles, and around a dozen made the crossing into Zanskar on Monday before snowfall strengthened.

In Kullu district, officials said Rohtang Pass will remain open to tourists until December 10, depending on weather. Manali SDM Raman Kumar Sharma said only 4×4 vehicles are being permitted uphill because of icy patches along the climb. Fewer vehicles have been attempting the ascent, but demand for snow viewing remains high.

With the high ranges turning white again, Rohtang’s winter landscape has re-emerged—drawing visitors back even as authorities warn that mountain travel will remain unpredictable in the days ahead.
