Grid Strained as Paddy Season Meets Rising Summer Temperatures

State energy consumption hits unprecedented level over five-year period

Chandigarh, July 18: A massive combination of agricultural watering schedules and climate-driven heatwaves pushed Punjab’s electricity demand to an all-time high this June. According to official figures compiled by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, overall energy needs escalated significantly, showing a 20 percent jump compared to statistics from five years ago. System operators successfully managed a total supply demand that approached nearly 4,000 lakh units on peak days, ensuring continuity across both rural and urban sectors through careful grid distribution.

Local power infrastructure worked alongside interstate networks to sustain the massive load. While internal generation within the state remains fixed at 6,500 megawatts under normal operating conditions, real-time demand required massive inflows from external systems. The state frequently adjusted its intake from the northern grid, occasionally drawing up to 11,100 megawatts to maintain equilibrium when local plants faced maximum capacity thresholds.

The annual start of the paddy cultivation cycle represents a primary catalyst for the mid-summer load surge. Farmers across the region activate irrigation systems to prepare fields, which heavily increases the baseline electricity load alongside the domestic power required to run home cooling systems during peak heat hours.

Historical tracking shows how rapidly the state’s energy landscape has transformed. The current peak demand of 17,147 megawatts stands in sharp contrast to past June records, such as the 14,358 megawatts logged in 2022 and the 15,307 megawatts seen in 2024. Daily supply logs from the end of the month showed deliveries reaching 3,862 lakh units and 3,820 lakh units on consecutive days, reflecting a year-on-year supply increase exceeding 10 percent.

Technical observers state that the rapid escalation requires systemic planning for future infrastructure needs. All India Power Engineers Federation spokesman VK Gupta declared that climate change leading to more heatwave days means more stress on power appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, fans, and others. He maintained that the demand will rise further, and the worst part is that it is rising rapidly, suggesting that it is high time governments find and look for long-term solutions.
