Homemade shampoo with onion, rosemary gains traction

Chandigarh, September 26: As concerns rise over chemical-laden hair products, many households are turning to natural remedies — and onion with rosemary has emerged as a simple, do-it-yourself shampoo formula now being shared widely.

Homemakers and herbal practitioners say the combination not only avoids harmful additives but also strengthens hair and promotes growth. “It is an old method being rediscovered,” said Rekha Sharma, a Chandigarh-based herbalist. “People are tired of sulfates and parabens in commercial shampoos.”

The recipe requires a medium-sized onion, a handful of fresh rosemary leaves, and water. Experts explain that the onion is chopped and boiled along with rosemary for about 15–20 minutes. The mixture is then cooled, strained, and stored in a glass bottle. Used twice a week, the liquid works as a gentle cleanser.

Onion contains sulfur, which researchers say supports keratin production, while rosemary is known for improving scalp circulation. Together, they are said to reduce hair fall and encourage new strands. “It is not a miracle solution, but with consistent use, people report healthier, shinier hair,” noted Ayurveda practitioner Manish Khanna.

Market data shows India’s herbal hair care industry is already expanding, but users complain that even “herbal” brands often carry preservatives and foaming agents. By contrast, homemade options allow control over ingredients.

“Making shampoo at home is cost-effective and safe,” said Khanna. “Even if it takes a little effort, at least you know exactly what is going on your scalp.”

While dermatologists advise patch tests before use, they agree that such natural preparations are gentler than synthetic products. For many, the onion-rosemary shampoo represents more than a beauty trend — it reflects a shift back to trusted remedies, away from chemical shelves.
