New Delhi, May 6 — India on Tuesday issued a scathing condemnation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) over its statement on the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, calling it “absurd” and “politically motivated,” while accusing Pakistan of steering the Islamic bloc to promote a distorted narrative.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded sharply after the OIC Group in New York, reportedly acting at Pakistan’s behest, released a statement questioning India’s account of the deadly attack that left 26 civilians—most of them tourists—dead.
“The statement issued by the OIC Group is absurd in its refusal to acknowledge the facts of the Pahalgam terrorist attack and its cross-border linkages,” the MEA said.
“This is yet another attempt by Pakistan, a known perpetrator of cross-border terrorism, to mislead the OIC into making a self-serving statement. We categorically reject this interference in India’s internal affairs.”
The OIC had on Monday voiced “deep concern over the deteriorating security environment in South Asia,” implying that India’s actions and “unfounded allegations against the Islamic Republic of Pakistan” were fueling tensions in the region.
The statement, reported by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, went on to claim that India’s stance risked aggravating an already volatile situation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Reiterating its “principled position” on terrorism, the OIC condemned “all forms and manifestations” of terror and rejected “any attempt to associate terrorism with a particular country, race, religion, culture or nationality.”
India, however, said the OIC had failed to recognize Pakistan’s direct involvement in sponsoring cross-border terrorism, particularly in the context of the Pahalgam attack.
“Pakistan’s fingerprints are all over this act of terror. Its efforts to internationalize and communalize this issue through the OIC are not just dishonest—they are dangerous,” an official said.
The April 22 attack in Pahalgam marked one of the deadliest assaults in Kashmir in recent years, reigniting tensions between India and Pakistan.
In its aftermath, India undertook decisive measures, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty and shutting down the integrated Attari check post, signaling a harder stance until Pakistan ends its support for cross-border terror activities.
“We will not tolerate interference in our domestic matters, nor will we allow the deaths of innocent civilians to be exploited for propaganda,” the MEA added.
