India takes cautious line Over Venezuela

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Jan 4: India on Sunday adopted a cautious diplomatic stance on the crisis in Venezuela, expressing concern over recent developments while stopping short of condemning the United States for its military action that resulted in the detention of President Nicolás Maduro.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said it was “closely monitoring the evolving situation” and called on all parties to pursue dialogue. “India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” the statement said.

The US carried out extensive strikes in Caracas a day earlier, detaining Maduro and triggering political uncertainty and security disruptions across the country. US President Donald Trump said the operation placed Maduro in custody and claimed Washington would oversee Venezuela until a stable transition was ensured.

The fallout has spread across Latin America. Colombia has tightened border security amid concerns of displacement, while Brazil warned that the US intervention could destabilise the region, even as it called for calm.

On the ground, reports from Venezuela described chaos, with power outages, communication breakdowns, and shortages of essential supplies. Social media videos showed residents fleeing explosions in several areas.

India has also issued a travel advisory urging its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela. Those currently in the country have been asked to exercise extreme caution and stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.

The MEA said the embassy remains in contact with the Indian community and will provide assistance as required, advising nationals to share updated contact details for emergency coordination.
