Iyer hospitalised in Sydney ICU after rib injury causes internal bleeding

SYDNEY, October 27 — Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is under intensive care at a Sydney hospital after sustaining internal bleeding from a rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia, officials said.

The incident unfolded when Iyer ran backward from backward point and completed a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey. The impact, however, appeared to have hurt his left ribs. He walked off clutching his side and was soon taken to the dressing room where his condition reportedly worsened.

According to team sources, the BCCI’s medical staff acted immediately when Iyer’s vital parameters fluctuated. “The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and rushed him to the hospital. He was admitted after scans confirmed internal bleeding,” said a person aware of the situation.

The source added that Iyer has been kept in the ICU since then. “He will remain under observation for two to seven days depending on his recovery. The main concern was to stop the spread of infection due to the bleeding,” the source said.

Medical experts at the hospital have declared his condition stable, though one insider described the injury as potentially life-threatening. “It could have been fatal. Thankfully, he’s stable now. He’s strong and responding well to treatment,” the person noted.

Initially, Iyer was expected to miss about three weeks of cricket, but doctors now believe the recovery may take longer. “Given the internal bleeding, his rehabilitation will likely extend beyond the earlier estimate. There’s no fixed return date yet,” the source said.

Iyer, 31, will remain in Sydney until doctors clear him for travel. He is not included in India’s upcoming T20 squad, giving him more time to recover fully before resuming competitive cricket.
