Karnal, August 24: The demand to increase the sanctioned staff strength at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC), Karnal, has intensified, with employees seeking 594 additional posts across cadres to bring the institution on a par with newly established medical colleges in Haryana.
The Non-Teaching Employees Welfare Association has been pursuing the issue with the state government and elected representatives. Its members met Kavinder Rana, representative of Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for Karnal district, on Monday and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention with Khattar, who is also the Karnal MP.
Association president Bhupender Singh Dhatterwal said KCGMC currently has 933 sanctioned posts, while the institutional requirement is 1,527 posts. He said the shortage was affecting the functioning of the medical college and hospital and could have an impact on patient-care services.
The association said newly established medical colleges in Haryana have 1,527 sanctioned posts each. It has been demanding that the sanctioned strength at KCGMC also be raised from 933 to 1,527.
The proposal has been pending with the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Panchkula, since November 2023.
“This file is pending even after clearance of all objections, and is now ready for approval,” Dhatterwal said.
The employees have also raised the matter with Health Minister Aarti Rao and Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand. According to the association, Anand raised the issue in the Haryana Assembly on August 26, 2025, and again on March 16, 2026.
“Despite it, no step has been taken so far,” Dhatterwal said.
Association member Sunil said repeated representations and discussions at different levels had failed to resolve the issue, while vice-president Padam Singh said increasing the staff strength would improve the functioning of both the hospital and medical college.
The association said KCGMC has been witnessing a growing patient load, including patients from Haryana and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, while its sanctioned staff strength has remained unchanged since 2012-13.
“With the increasing number of patients from different districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the number of sanctioned posts should be increased,” association member Amit Gautam said.
The employees said approval of the additional 594 posts would strengthen healthcare delivery at KCGMC and help the institution meet the needs of patients from Karnal and surrounding districts.
