Karnal, August 24: With patient numbers rising at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC), Karnal, employees have stepped up their demand for an increase in sanctioned posts, saying the institution is operating with far fewer staff positions than newly established medical colleges in Haryana.
The Non-Teaching Employees Welfare Association wants the sanctioned strength at KCGMC to be increased from the existing 933 posts to 1,527, requiring the creation of 594 additional posts across cadres.
The association took up the matter with Kavinder Rana, representative of Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for Karnal district, on Monday. The delegation submitted a memorandum and requested Rana to take up the issue with Khattar, who represents Karnal in the Lok Sabha.
Association president Bhupender Singh Dhatterwal said the proposed increase was necessary to address the growing workload at the medical college and hospital.
He said newly established medical colleges in Haryana have 1,527 sanctioned posts each, while KCGMC continues to have only 933 posts.
The proposal to revise KCGMC’s sanctioned strength has been pending with the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Panchkula, since November 2023.
“This file is pending even after clearance of all objections, and is now ready for approval,” Dhatterwal said.
The association has previously approached Health Minister Aarti Rao and Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand over the issue. It said Anand raised the matter in the Haryana Assembly on August 26, 2025, and March 16, 2026, but the employees are still awaiting a decision.
Association member Sunil said the issue had been discussed repeatedly and representations submitted at various levels, but the demand had yet to be approved.
Vice-president Padam Singh said the additional posts would help improve the functioning of KCGMC and its hospital and strengthen patient-care services.
The employees also pointed to the changing workload at the institution. Association members Amit Gautam and Pardeep Taya said patient numbers had increased substantially, while the sanctioned staff position had remained unchanged since 2012-13.
“With the increasing number of patients from different districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the number of sanctioned posts should be increased,” Gautam said.
The association maintained that bringing KCGMC’s staffing pattern in line with other newly established government medical colleges would help it cope with the growing demand for healthcare services in Karnal and neighbouring areas.
