Legislative Battle Lines Drawn for Six-Day Punjab Assembly Session

Stormy Debates Anticipated Over Security, Agrarian Rights, and Governance

Chandigarh, Oct 22: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha opened its six-day legislative meeting on Thursday amidst heightened political friction, as opposition factions mobilized to corner the ruling administration on critical issues encompassing the narcotics trade, the fatal attack on anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, overall public safety, and allegations of graft.

Observers maintained that the floor of the House would witness intense friction as legislators tackled pressing state concerns. Leaders from various political platforms declared that accountability regarding administrative lapses would form the core of the ongoing legislative discourse.

Defending its policy framework, the ruling party maintained that the persistent narcotics crisis stemmed from the governance failures of past administrations. State officials further asserted that the transit of illicit substances through distant coastal ports and heavily fortified international borders remained a central security responsibility, thereby shifting accountability toward central enforcement agencies.

Parallel to the security debates, the session is slated to feature a contentious resolution demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside anticipated announcements regarding welfare provisions for women. Concurrently, agricultural and water resource matters emerged as prominent focal points, with the government indicating plans to assert state jurisdiction over river waters while maintaining its demand for the revocation of the Dam Safety Act.
