Majithia denied bail again

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Dec 4: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday refused to grant bail to Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in the vigilance bureau’s disproportionate assets case, which alleges laundering of ₹540 crore in drug money. The order was issued by Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya on a petition filed in September, with the full text awaited.

Majithia, who was arrested on June 25 and is currently in judicial custody, has argued that the case is driven by political vendetta. In his plea, he said, “These cases are meant to keep me inside.”

The vigilance bureau opposed the request, noting in court that Majithia’s release could affect witness testimony. The agency earlier submitted a 40,000-page chargesheet in a Mohali court detailing its findings.

The DA case emerges from the continuing SIT investigation into the 2021 NDPS case against Majithia, registered on the basis of a 2018 special task force report on drug trafficking.

Majithia had previously been jailed for over five months before obtaining bail in the 2021 case in August 2022. That investigation remains open.
