Chandigarh, July 22: Chandigarh Police have arrested a man allegedly involved in smuggling charas (hashish) from Himachal Pradesh into the city. The accused, Dhani Ram, a resident of Mansa village in Kullu district, was caught with 435 grams of cannabis resin during a special operation carried out by the Manimajra police.

Acting on a tip-off about drug trafficking from the hill state, a police team launched sustained surveillance, monitoring suspected routes and individuals in both uniform and plainclothes over several days.

Their efforts bore fruit in Manimajra, where they spotted a man behaving suspiciously. “When signalled to stop, he attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended. A search of his belongings led to the recovery of 435 grams of charas,” said a senior police officer.

During interrogation, Dhani Ram confessed that he was a farmer from Kullu and had procured the hashish from Himachal. He told police he used to smuggle the drug into Chandigarh hidden inside fruit and vegetable-laden trucks to avoid detection at checkpoints.

A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against him at the Manimajra police station. Investigators are now working to trace his supply network, frequent transport routes, and possible buyers within Chandigarh.
