A masked robber shot and killed 62-year-old Indian-origin shopkeeper Suresh Parsottamdas Patel inside his store in Jackson, Tennessee, on August 20, 2026. The incident occurred in full view of his 19-year-old daughter, who was present in the establishment during the robbery.
Patel, originally from Aakhaj village in Mehsana district, Gujarat, had resided in the United States for nearly 30 years. After spending decades operating in Chicago, he had established his new commercial store in Jackson City only seven days before the fatal shooting.
News of the shooting sent shockwaves through Patel’s home village in India. Aakhaj resident Dinesh Suthar stated that a pall of gloom has descended over Aakhaj village following the tragic news, asserting that Suresh Parsottamdas Patel was shot dead in Jackson, Tennessee. He maintained that Patel had lived in Chicago for a long period before opening the new store.
Local sources described how the assailant robbed the register before opening fire. Suthar declared that on the night of August 20, 2026, a robber wearing a mask, jeans, and a T-shirt entered the store. He affirmed that the accused stole cash from the drawer and subsequently shot Patel, killing him on the spot.
The traumatic ordeal faced by the victim’s family has drawn widespread concern across the diaspora. Suthar affirmed that Patel’s 19-year-old daughter was standing nearby throughout the horrifying ordeal. He declared that the incident has left villagers deeply concerned, noting that fear and anxiety are growing among community members regarding violent crime trends in the United States.
