MOGA, May 15: The Punjab Government has launched a major crackdown following the Amritsar hooch tragedy, with the Moga police seizing 1,200 litres of lahan — a raw material used in the distillation of illicit liquor — during a raid near the Sutlej riverbanks.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Fatehgarh Panjtoor Police Station raided locations near villages Sangheya and Boghewala, uncovering several plastic drums hidden along the river.
Three persons — Sukhwinder Singh alias Billu, Gurdyal Singh and Gulab Singh — were arrested during the operation. Police said multiple others involved in the illegal trade are still at large and searches are being carried out at suspected hideouts.
A case under Sections 61/1/14 of the Punjab Excise Act and Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered. Police emphasized that the drive against illicit liquor will continue with “zero tolerance.”
