Chandigarh, Nov 21: The Chandigarh municipal corporation and Indian Oil Corporation Limited on Thursday signed an MoU for setting up a compressed biogas plant at the Dadumajra dumping site, marking a step toward mechanised waste processing and reduced dependence on the landfill.

The signing took place at the MC office in the presence of senior officials, including commissioner Amit Kumar, joint commissioner Himanshu Gupta, chief engineer C.B. Ojha, medical officer of health Inderdeep Kaur, and IOCL representatives led by executive director Ajit Thakur. The agreement was executed between Ojha and Thakur.

As per the terms, the municipal corporation will supply 200 tonnes per day of segregated organic municipal waste and 30 tonnes of cow dung. IOCL will take up the design, funding, construction and operation of the facility. The corporation will provide 10 acres of land on nominal lease for the project, which also mandates a 33% green belt and compliance with CPCB standards.

Officials said the plant is expected to improve waste handling capacity, lower landfill emissions and support the city’s renewable energy goals.
