NEW DELHI, FEB 3: Rajya Sabha member Satnam Singh Sandhu has urged for the swift digital transformation of Punjab’s cooperative societies to ensure transparency and accountability. Speaking in New Delhi, the MP noted that the long-pending computerization of these societies is essential to eliminate political interference and improve efficiency for the farming community.

Sandhu expressed his support for the National Cooperative Policy 2025, which has allocated ₹2,925 crore for the digitalization of primary agricultural credit societies. He mentioned that this technological shift, combined with the proposed establishment of a regional center for the Tribhuvan Cooperative University in Punjab, would modernize the state’s agricultural landscape.

“Digital transformation will ensure that our cooperative societies are professional and transparent,” Sandhu said during the session. He directly said that the sector needs to move beyond traditional methods to embrace agriculture-based entrepreneurship, particularly for women and youth.

The MP showcased the success of entities like Markfed and Verka as symbols of Punjab’s cooperative strength but cautioned that the state must not be left behind in the national push for modernization. He noted that since cooperative societies handle 60% of the fertilizer market in Punjab, their stability is vital for farmer self-reliance.
