Amritsar, Feb 15: The Amritsar police are investigating the mysterious death of 26-year-old Akashdeep Saini, the son of a local Head Constable, who was found unconscious in a vehicle near a shrine in the Guru Nanak Pura locality. Saini, a graduate and former football player, was discovered late Friday evening before being rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. While initial suspicions pointed toward a potential drug overdose, Assistant Commissioner of Police Jaspal Singh maintained that the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed pending an autopsy report.
The victim’s father, Head Constable Ashok Kumar, initially voiced strong concerns regarding the prevalence of narcotics in the Islamabad police station jurisdiction. Kumar asserted that his son had recently returned home after completing a stint at a rehabilitation center. During an initial interaction with the media, the grieving father questioned the effectiveness of local enforcement, noting that if drugs are easily available, what can the police do. He further mentioned that his son returned after rehabilitation only to lose his life, which shows how rampant the problem is.
However, the investigation took a turn when Kumar issued a video statement through the police department clarifying his earlier remarks. He declared that his previous comments were an emotional outburst and affirmed that the police are doing their best against drug peddling. ACP Jaspal Singh noted that the preliminary examination of the body found no marks of drug injections. He stated that the police would investigate the matter thoroughly and appropriate action would be taken if consumption of drugs comes to light.
