NCM seeks probe report after gurdwara violence in Bijnor

Chandigarh, Jan 3: The National Commission for Minorities has sought a detailed report from the Uttar Pradesh government following violence at a gurdwara in Bijnor, senior BJP leader Iqbal Singh Lalpura said Saturday.

Lalpura said the commission acted on a representation he submitted after a religious programme at the gurdwara was allegedly disrupted on Veer Bal Diwas, a day observed to honour the sacrifice of the Sahibzadas.

“An atmosphere of fear was created at a place of worship during a peaceful programme. Such incidents cannot be tolerated,” Lalpura said.

According to him, a local resident, Ramnideep Singh, sustained serious injuries in the attack, including damage to his eye.

Lalpura, who is a member of the BJP’s parliamentary board and a former NCM chairperson, described the incident as an assault on constitutional values and communal harmony.

“This is not just a law and order issue. It concerns religious freedom and social peace,” he said.

The NCM, in its communication to the state government, has asked for a comprehensive investigation report and information on action taken against those involved, Lalpura said.

“The commission has underlined that violence or intolerance at religious sites will be viewed with utmost seriousness,” he added.

The district administration and police have been directed to take strict legal steps against the perpetrators and ensure that peace is maintained in the area.

Expressing confidence in the process, Lalpura said he believes the state government and the commission will work together to deliver justice to the victim and put safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents.
