Mumbai, May 4: Fifteen years after its release, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na continues to enjoy cult popularity, but fans hoping for a sequel may be disappointed. Director Abbas Tyrewala, in a conversation with Imran Khan on the Aamir Khan Talkies YouTube channel, revealed that Aamir Khan strongly opposed plans for a follow-up film.
Tyrewala shared that he approached Aamir, who produced the original film, shortly after its 2008 release with a concept for a sequel. “At some point, Jai and Aditi would be on the verge of a breakup,” Abbas said. “Jai, drunk at a party, would run into Meghna—his former love interest.” But the idea didn’t sit well with Aamir.
“Aamir told me, ‘Never refer to this movie again. I don’t want to hear anything about the sequel if that’s the direction you’re going in,’” Tyrewala recalled.
The director also admitted that his own interest in a sequel waned over time. “I don’t know how to reboot fairytales,” he said. “I haven’t seen them working well.” Imran and Tyrewala agreed during the chat that while a casual reunion over coffee with the cast might be fun, a sequel would not do justice to the story.
Released in 2008, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na followed the evolving relationship between best friends Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D’Souza), who eventually discover they are meant to be together. The ensemble cast included Prateik Babbar, Manjari Fadnis, and Ayaz Khan, and the film went on to earn over ₹82 crore worldwide.
Imran Khan, who went off the radar after his 2015 film Katti Batti, hinted at a comeback in 2023. Posting on Threads, he wrote: “To whom it may concern; I hear you. And I’m working on it. Thank you for being so patient with me.”
Fans continue to express their affection for both the actor and the film, but for now, it seems Jaane Tu will remain a one-time fairytale.
